Germs are everywhere – Protect yourself!

It seems like everywhere we look there is advice on how to keep germs away. There are people wearing masks to go shopping, and I have even seen people wearing gloves. Social Distancing is a new phrase in our every-day life. Staying home is good and hugging is bad. This all seems like a sad way to live, but we will do it if we must…for a while. To be healthy and happy, you need to take steps toward health in many areas of your life, using all available tools.

Here are some Health Basics from an email I sent out in February 2019

Eat Right – “Our bodies thrive on good nutrition. A diet rich in vegetables, fruits, whole grains, beans and legumes, raw nuts and seeds will feed the body tissues for optimal health and wellness. A nutrient dense diet allows the body to achieve sustained energy, better sleep, clearer thinking, and ideal body weight, plus it builds strong bones, and fights off disease.” (This is a quote from my dear friend Nancy with Fitter Fort Collins. Check out her website here.) In other words, a healthy diet will keep the germs at bay.

Exercise – I know I am a bit partial, but I think you should be in 2-3 yoga classes a week, as well as a TRX class. (Check out the studio schedule here.) Even when we go through times of social distancing, you can take a class from the comfort of your own home using Zoom. (I even took a class from a teacher in Illinois today!) Then add some work outside of a class too. You need to be able to do some form of exercise every day. Get your heart rate up, stretch, and get strong. There are lots of ways…

Sleep – Get enough sleep! It is our health secret weapon. Adults need 7-9 hours each night! I know there are lots of excuses on why you are not sleeping. Do some research (there is a lot of info online), look at your habits honestly and adjust your schedule/stress level/ sleep hygiene to get back on track. (Read this Blog about Insomnia written by yours truly.)

Wash your hands often

No smoking – Is there anything else to say here?
No caffeine or sugary drinks – You won’t need these if you are eating well, exercising, and sleeping enough!
Lots of water – Warm water, room temp, cold water, it doesn’t matter… get hydrated. Your body weight divided in half equals the number of ounces of water you need each day.

Germs Swiss Army Knife

I know that is a lot of info (and you need to do some research to look into your personalized needs). (If you need any help, give me a call 970-646-2022 and I can point you in the right direction.)

Yoga is a Swiss Army Knife that can support your health in many ways. It helps you manage stress and it will improve your sleep quality. A regular yoga practice will reduce aches and pains so that exercise is more enjoyable. When your sleep and exercise are adequate, you will not feel like you need sugary drinks and caffeine. You will feel stronger, and healthier. And you will protect yourself from a world of germs! 😉
